What is CBD? How is it beneficial in massage?

CBD is an abbreviation for cannabidiol, which is a compound that is extracted from the hemp plant.

Humans have what is called an endocannabinoid system (ECS), which is a system of "lock & key" receptors, that receives both the endocannabinoids (those that the body produces on its own), as well cannabinoids from external sources (such as CBD, THC, and dozens of other compounds that are found in hemp or it's cousin, marijuana).

Hemp was legalized at the federal level in 2018 through the Farm Bill, which requires the hemp plants from which extractions are made to have no more than 0.3% THC. As such, CBD is non-psychoactive (won't get you high). However, it is highly beneficial to the endocannabinoid system in helping the body remain in, or return to, a state of balance (homeostasis).

The body of knowledge, through scientific research studies, indicates that CBD is particularly beneficial for those that suffer from chronic inflammation such as arthritis and muscle tension, and for those with anxiety.

CBD can be ingested in the form of infused oil, tincture, gummies, and other edibles, or topically, with an infused oil, salve, or balm. While most spas charge substantially extra for a CBD add-on, at Spa City CBD Massage, we offer complimentary topical CBD with every massage. It is typically applied to areas of chronic tension such as the neck and shoulders, or to arthritic areas like feet or knees. If a client prefers no CBD, that's absolutely fine, we have non-CBD massage cream as well.
